Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. It is to celebrate the homecoming of the prince Rama, who was exiled to the forests for 14 years. The pats are starting their season and they are off to a good start.  I will be keeping track of how many games we win and lose. So far we’ve been doing very well.

Speaking of good let’s talk about the red sox. They’ve been doing well-awesome! I like our coach this year. I hope we keep him! I didn’t think Bobby Valientin would last long. It’s sad but their season is coming to an end.

In towns fall ball, also known as base- ball in the fall, fall softball and field hockey. So has hockey, and basketball is coming soon.  Fall soft ball, to be exact.

People of the North

Night is falling in the Tongass Rainforest. In a small clearing, my clan is setting up for the winter. My sisters Elsie, Anya, and Anna are already asleep in the winter house. Samantha, Eliza and Poppy are making parkas. Nickie and Sonia are making bracelets. I am carving totem poles with Mika. The sun sets in beautiful shades of pink, blue, purple, and orange. Snow starts to fall. All is peaceful in the rainforest                            2

Spring is here and we will have to move north. Food is scarce so we eat dried salmon and we take water or ice from anywhere we can. Soon, we will reach the tundra and we pick so many gooseberries that we can’t hold all of them in our leather bags. We take the last of the snow to make ice cream with our berries. The sun sets over the Arctic tundra. We eat our berry ice cream. We set up camp. Everything is peaceful.

              White
      By Tariq Bennet, Portland, Maine
White is the shiny color of a blank sheet of paper.
White is the bright color of snow early in the morning.
White is the glimmering moon, shining against the night.
White is a dusty piece of blackboard chalk.
White is a clean white board.
White is a spotless blank wall.
White is a ______, waiting to become
A different color
Of
The world.

                I am a Musician
By Rena Niko, Katie Grey, and Hannah Ieywan, Tokyo, Japan

I am a musician. I lift my cello to rest against my shoulder and my bow rises to the thickest, lowest string. A long, deep, note hovers in the air for a moment, than fades off. I love my dark, shiny, wood instrument. I love my Cello.
~ Katie Grey

I am a musician. My ½ size violin sings out to me as I draw my bow across the E string. Then my bow whips across the D string. The note G, than A, tremble in the air, than waver off. I love my cinnamon colored, polished, music maker. I love my violin.
~ Rena Niko

I am a musician. I find middle C on the vast grand piano and start a Bach piece. I sway to the music of my piano, pounding on the keys. The piece ends, all too soon. But, I lift up the top of the piano, and begin Vivaldi. Now, I can watch the strings of the piano move to the music, as if an invisible person was swinging them back and forth. I love my shining, majestic, black string-percussion singer. I love my piano.
~ Hannah Ieywan

Mineral

I LOVE minerals! As a matter of fact, I own two of my own, crystal and diamond. They’re both really special to me. My uncle got them for me at the Smithsonian museum gift shop in Washington D.C. The two gems are both opaque. I love the word opaque. Anyway, they are o-pay-que, and beautiful. Beautiful and opaque. Opaque. Opaaaaaayque! Op-p-p-p-p-p-p-p-aaayquuuueeeeee!!!!! Sorry. Anyway, I love my two, opaque, plastic minerals! Oooooooopaque!

                Salt and Sugar
      By Tanna Kuli, Honolulu, Hawaii

I slide a smooth, orange, sticky, oval candy into my mouth.
“Do you like it? The honey-orange-apple-caramel? Does it taste good? What does it taste like?” Mum inquires.
  “It’s not bad. But….It’s weird.”
Mum’s an inventor of sorts. She makes candy. I’m her taste tester, and right now I’m having her newest invention, the Honey-Orange-Apple-Caramel, or HOAC. I try not to make her feel bad, but it’s….it’s not right. There’s something wrong. It was caramel, sweet, salty… SALTY!
“Mum, what did you put in this?” I ask.
“Oh, just, the usual, caramel, sugar, bit of orange juice…”
     “Mum, show me the sugar.”
     “Right here, Sweetie.”
      “Mum, that says salt.”
“Honey? Oh… yes, you’re right. Oops!”
“Mum, that’s the eighth time that’s happened. Also, don’t make these so sticky, ‘cause they get stuck in my braces.”
      “Just spit it out, Honey.”
“Mum, it’s stuck in my braces,” I say, prying the candy from the wires in my mouth.
“Darling, will you try my super sugar coated jellybean?”
       “Mum, that’s coated in salt.”

Sky
   Yvonne Teeler, Tallahassee, Florida

The sky is pink, orange, white, green, blue, purple… The sun is shining through the silhouetted leaves of a tall tree. Little mini mountains filter the sun. The first stars are beginning to come out, not needing to hide from a veil of light covering the sky anymore. The moon is in the east, the sun to the west, still both visible. I am alone on a green hill. I stand with my arms spread out, eyes closed, letting the breeze waft over me. For one, fleeting moment all the colors of the rainbow are in the sky, and both the sun and the moon. Equal balance between day and night, light, and darkness. Then the sun disappears, the moon rises, and the sky is a dark, velvety blue.
The moon is now high in the sky, stars surrounding stars.

Old is new
By Karen and Matt Blance, the Carribean

A piece of cheese is a luxury. A tiny stick house is a mansion. A teaspoon of water is a perfectly clear, clean, pitcher of water. A scrap of paper is an unlimited supply of clean paper. A snip of lead is a perfectly sharpened pencil. A block of wood is a white, china, shiny, clean plate. A square of frayed cloth is a embroidered, warm, feather comforter.

        For a mouse.

                                                            I swear I did

I saw a witch!
Her skin was wrinkled, folded over, and white as the moon, with a greenish tinge.
Her hair was black as pitch, and straight as a ruler.
She was wearing a black emerald cape and on her head was a tall pointed black hat.
Black sleek broom in her left hand, the tail of a dangling black cat in her right hand. Piercing black eyes came to rest on ME. I was frozen. She started towards me. I stumbled back, unable to breath. Suddenly, the sun rose. The witch let out a piercing scream. Then, with a flash, the witch disappeared. I let out a huge sigh, and then ran home.

                I’m serious

I saw a Pilgrim!
He was wearing a three-cornered hat and tall socks. He had a brown tunic on and brown, short pants. He stared at me, and said,
“Good Morrow, could thy tell thee where thee am young miss?”
“I’m not supposed to talk to strangers…” I backed away.
“But miss, do thy not know thee can trust me?” Then his body started whirling round and round. The wind whistled around him. Then, all at once, everything was still. I wondered why my mouth was opened, about to talk. I shrugged and set off down the street.

“He was one weird looking guy, with a gray complexion and bristly eyebrows. His behavior was even weirder. I could hardly believe my eyes-it looked as if he was floating off the ground like a ghost…..Vampire!”
-The Ink Drinker

                This Halloween

I was just walking along the road on Halloween evening. I was walking to my friend’s house to get ready for Halloween with her. It was 6:30 and it takes about a half hour to get to my friend’s house. But, I took a wrong turn. It was 6:50. I thought I knew a short cut. I got lost. It was 7:00. I searched for the way back. I thought I found it. It was 7:30. I was wrong. I kept searching tile 8:45. I knew I should have brought my phone. Suddenly I saw an old woman looking at me.
“That way.” She said, pointing at a path I hadn’t tried yet. Suddenly I realized the sky was dark and that the woman had a tall pointed hat on. She was holding a black cat and more black cats prowled around her. Bats fluttered around her head. She grinned wickedly. I swiveled around and ran. I didn’t care where I was going; all I cared about was getting away from that WITCH! Miracle I ended up in front of my friend’s house. I slipped on my witch costume over my clothes. When I bent down to pick up my fake black cat I instead picked up one of the witch’s cats that had followed me. I didn’t notice. I went to my friend’s door and rang the doorbell I had decided to forget about the witch.
“Trick or Treat!” I said when Rebecca (my friend) opened the door.
“Wow. You look amazing! How’d you get the cat and the-the bats?”
“The cat came from Toys R Us… But what bats?”
“The bats fluttering above your head! And the cat’s real, it’s not a toy! Also, that looks like a real wart on your face! And that hair- it can’t be fake!” Meanwhile as I later found out, the real witch (now looking suspiciously like me) was lost.
This was the scariest Halloween EVER!

The True Story of Halloween

The Celts, who once lived in Ireland, celebrated the arrival of winter with a holiday called All Hallows Eve. They lit fires and danced around them. They wore frightening masks to scare away ghosts. They carved pumpkins and placed candles inside of them. According to the legend, the candlelight was thought to keep away spirits of the night.

And that's it!
