Keystone XL
By Samantha DoLitle

The proposed Keystone XL Pipeline will allow the United States to access safe, reliable, and affordable energy supplies from Canada, and reduce our need to import crude oil from less stable countries and regions of the world.
In addition to improving the nation’s economic and energy security, during its building phase the proposed project will provide approximately 20,000badly needed manufacturing and construction jobs, and contribute an estimated $20 billion in benefits to the U.S. economy.
I support the expansion of the Keystone XL Pipeline and call on the President to act now!

Those are the words from some madman. Below is the stuff you really should look at.

While we may get a lot of oil from the pipeline, it will do a lot of damage to nature and the animals that live there. And look at all that money they need for this rip up nature project, I mean, 20,000! You might as well ask me to give up my education fund. And you can say bye-bye to your allowance. I mean, you would rather tear up nature then have less pollution? In my opinion, you are doing double damage by 1.) tearing up sooo much nature, and 2.) doing it to get oil - that pollutes even more! This could also affect the whole word! I mean, for all we know there could be a huge oil spill. I mean who knows how reliable this “Pipeline” can be. If 1 teeny tiny rock gets in the way of the pipeline we could get no oil and that 20,000 will be wasted. And who wants to waist all that money- when it can be spent on much more important things like health care for everyone. Now, you are probably thinking,  "oh, it is just a tiny little Pipeline." But now look at the map of the Good Bye Nature Trail.

Look! People have already built a pipeline. So why do we need another one? I don’t know, but I DEFINITELY don’t want another one. I say NO To The MASTER MASH UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can email us what you think and why at whosthatmagazine@gmail.com .

Owls
By Poppy Winfield
Owls are amazing creatures. These birds have so many wonderful features, for example:

  • they can spin their heads around 270 degrees, maximum
  •   they can fly almost completely silently, due to the specially designed primary feathers on their wings
  •  they are nocturnal
  • they have special night vision
  • owls are all over the world
  • some owls eat rodents, and some eat plants…

AND MORE!
Owls have fascinated people for years! They can do amazing things that even humans can’t attempt. Scientists have even built planes inspired by an owl! Owls are my favorite animals for many of these reasons, but it would take me a long time to tell you all of them! Also, owls are soooooooooooooooooooooo cute, (in my opinion).

This is a borrowing owl!

This type of bird (the owl) can sneak up on a mouse so silently that it will not be noticed until the last second, which by then would be too late. This stealthy bird will even sometimes eat other small birds! If you want to learn more about these fabulous birds, go to Owl Pages

As you can see, winter is different for people all over the world. But some places are really always hot and some places are always cold.

Here’s a winter song about snow!

SNOW IS FALLING
Snow is falling, gently falling, from a sky of gray.
Turns a dreary morning to a magic winter day.
Cold and clean and white. Shining diamond bright.
All the world seems right when snow is falling, gently falling from a sky of gray.
From a dawn, crisp in its chill, through a sunless noon. To an evening lovely and still, under a silver moon in the moonlight.
Snow is drifting, gently drifting through the frosty air.
Fills an ordinary place with wonder everywhere.
Cold and clean and white. Shining diamond bright.
All the world seems right when snow is falling, gently falling from a sky of gray.
Turns a dreary morning to a magic winter day.
Cold and clean and white. Shining diamond bright.
All the world seems right when snow is falling, gently falling from a sky of gray.
From a sky…of gray.

Anna’s cakes, pies, and pastries
Today I am going to tell you how to make a : GINGER BREAD

Nothing says home and comfort like a warm square of moist ginger bread. Either out of hand of completed by some whipped cream or fruit. Wholesome enough to suffice for a quick breakfast, this beloved treat goes together in minutes. We tasted this cake with traditional whole wheat flour and whole wheat pastry flour side by side. The traditional whole wheat gave a more cake like texture, rose higher and was preferred by our tasters as being more what they think of as a traditional ginger bread. The whole wheat pastry flour version was more brownie like if that’s the texture you crave.

                                                          -Whole Grain Baking

Yield: one-9 inch square cake 16 servings
Baking Temperature: 350 F
Baking Time: 45-50 min
2 ¼ cups (9 ounces) traditional whole wheat flour or whole wheat pasty flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup (1 stick, 4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted
¼ cup (1 ¾ ounces) granulated sugar
2 tablespoons (1 3/8 ounces) brown sugar corn syrup
1 large egg
¾ cup (3 ¼ ounces) minced crystallized ginger
Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease and flour a 9 inch-square pan
Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Stir together the butter, sugar, corn syrup, egg, molasses, and buttermilk in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the flour mixture until the batter is evenly moistened. Stir in the crystallized ginger. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until the center is set, 45 to 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool on a rack for 15 minutes. Serve warm, with whipped cream, if desired.

Through an Adults Eye: School
Interview with Damon Barglow, stock manager

Q: Did you like or dislike school when you were a kid? Why or why not?

A: It really depended on the teacher. Some times I loved it when I had a good teacher that would really work with me and was excited about what he or she was teaching.

Q: What do you think of schools, now that you’re an adult?

A: I think school is a necessary part of growing up. I think that, however, most schools are out of step with modern society. If you ran a business where you had to do one activity for an hour, a bell rang, and then you went to another place and did something completely different, your business would no longer exist. Schools need to adapt to the way society works now.

Q: When you went to school, what was your favorite grade, and why?

A: My favorite grade was Junior year in high school. I was very popular! I knew a lot of people in the school and got a long with different groups.

Q: If you could, what would you change about the school you went to, and why?

A: I would have made it less regimented and more like the real world.

Q:  If you could, what would you change about school now?

A: Same answer as above. I would make schools more flexible, give students more input and teachers more flexibility to teach what they thought was important.

Q: How would you compare schools now to the ones you went to? Do like schools now better? Did you like the schools you went to better? Why?

A: Hard to say. I think schools are still too structured. But there is still a lot of really creative work done in schools.

Thank you, Damon, for the interview!

The Story Of Hanukkah’s Presents

Many people are greedy, and don’t understand the importance of believing what is most definitely there, for example, the Hanukah elf. Everyone thinks that elves are only for Christmas, but no, elves are useful little creatures that work fast and quietly, and, if needed, are very obedient at times. The Hanukkah elf feels like a slave sometimes, doing nice things for people, even though they seem to think he’s not real. And since the Hanukkah elf feels this way, it also feels very strongly disregarded, and barely even liked by anyone who knew he existed. All these greedy people who celebrate Hanukah tell their children that they bought them the presents, that they cost so much money, and so on. But really the Hanukah elf makes all the presents for a family (each elf is assigned a different family) and hides them under the parents bed, so the parents before the children will find them. The Hanukah elf does this until the last night of Hanukah, then waits until next year, but even though right now the Hanukah elf is ignored, I have faith that the Hanukah elf will someday be recognized.

The Best Christmas EVER
By Kayla
I woke up on Christmas morning by the loud sound of my brother Nick’s voice screaming, “WAKE UP, WAKE UP, It's CHRISTMAS!" I slowly turned around and gazed at my clock. It was only 6:00 AM! Even though I was tired I couldn’t wait to open my presents. I threw off my blankets and Nick and I raced down stairs. Our stockings were on the ground. (That’s how heavy they were!) Nick and I grabbed all the stockings and lugged them up the stairs so we could open them in my parent’s bedroom. I kept peeking in my stocking to see what I got. I saw some very good presents!
When we got up stairs my parents were still deep in their dreams. But not for long! I jumped on my mom screaming, “WAKE UP, WAKE UP!" She slowly opened her eyes and looked at the clock. It was 6:15 AM. When I looked at my Dad he was putting on his glasses. Nick must have woke him up.
“Are you ready to open the stockings?” I screeched.
“Alright.” my mom and Dad responded sleepily at the same time. I handed my mom, dad and Nick their stockings. We all poured our stuff onto the bed. Some of my presents fell onto the floor so I pushed all of them off the bed and onto the floor. There were Mike & Ikes, silly putty, a monkey hat, sunglasses and … my mouth dropped… TAYLOR SWIFT TICKETS! I so excited I let out a loud yelp. I stood up and started jumping up and down.  My heart was beating against my chest!  Taylor Swift  is my favorite singer.
“What did you get? ” My dad asked me.
“Taylor swift tickets!" I screamed at him.
“Nice.” he replied. I had a feeling this was the start of the best Christmas ever. I looked at my mom, dad, and brother and thought:  “ I hope they are having just as good a Christmas as I am.”
When every one was finally done opening their stockings, it was time for my favorite part…the presents under the tree!
Nick and I raced down stairs: we couldn’t wait to open our presents. When we walked into the T.V room we saw lots of presents in bright green wrapping paper with snowmen all over it.
I searched through all the presents to find mine, and then I saw a big pile of presents that said KAYLA in big black sharpie. There were some big ones and some small ones. When my mom and dad came strolling down the hall Nick screamed to them, “Can we start opening our presents?”
“Go ahead.” my dad said. I took a weird shaped present and ripped it open. It was a HAIR STRAIGHTENER! “YAY!” I screamed with joy.  ( I really wanted a hair straightener.)
Everybody started looking at me. “What?” I said, my face turning red. "Onto the next present." I thought.
A small package caught my attention so I decided to open that.  It was extremely heavy.  “How strange!” I thought to myself.  I quickly  ripped off the paper…it was an iPad mini! I let out a mega scream and I didn’t care that everyone was looking at me.  I hugged it with joy!

The best Christmas continued. Next I opened a present in the shape of a small box. They were Ugg slippers, size 2! I stuck my hand in felt the cozy insides of the slipper. There was just the right amount of fur to keep your foot nice and warm.  They fit perfectly as I put them on.  I couldn’t carry all my presents in one trip up to up to my bedroom—there were so many!

I took all my presents and carefully place them all over my bed. Then I got dressed to go to my grandmother’s house for breakfast. I ran downstairs and made it half way down the hallway when I stopped and looked at the wrapping paper monster and the mess that it had made. There was red and green tissue paper everywhere. And big clumps of wrapping paper. That got me thinking about how I got everything I wanted. This was the BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!

The New Years Rabbit

A long time ago (long before the dawn of recorded history), there was a period in Earth’s history during which the planet was inhabited entirely by rabbits. There were no wildcats, no wildebeests, no wombats or werewolves, no wart hogs, no weasels.

In that era, rabbits ruled the world. And, for that reason, the holiday that comes in the middle of winter, celebrating a new beginning and a bright new future, was called “New Ears.”

A particular rabbit was getting ready for the big New Ears celebration. She had decided to wear her rabbit princess outfit. She loved this outfit, which included a gown, a lacy veil, a sparkling tiara and, best of all, a special rabbit princess scepter -

As the rabbit was making a last adjustment to her sparkling tiara, she put her scepter down on top of the New Ears party invitation, like this -
         New        Ears Party
You are invited to a big New Ears Party at Eliza Newport’s house.
Wear your special New Ears outfit. Carrots will be served.
Please RSVP to Eliza Newport by December 15.

When she went to pick up the scepter, she stopped in amazement. Her scepter's v shaped top had created a Y in front of the “Ear” She had created a new word! And such an appropriate word, for the new beginning and the bright new future did indeed begin with the new year.

The rabbit was so excited that she showed all her friends at the party. They also were enthusiastic about the new word and spread the idea among their friends and acquaintances (who were, of course, rabbits).

And that is how the holiday of New Ears became our own celebration of New Years (even though we are no longer all rabbits).

An Awesome Win
“Get back up Aidan! We're losing 5-3!” Mr. Yang called. “Aidan! Aidan! Aidan!"
I woke with a start, heart pounding.
“Aidan!” my mom called, "It's 6:10. Get up! You have your big game.”  I had about 30 minutes until I had to go to the Arlington Hockey rink. We were playing Twin City for our state championship. We had tied 1 to 1 last time our team played them.
I darted down the creaky wooden stairs, flying my dark green blanket behind me and went in to the kitchen for pancakes. They were good, but my dad put on too much maple syrup.
After I went to get dressed, drinking a glass of hot cocoa at the same time. Soon, I was out the door!
It only took 5 minutes to get there, because we live so close. I got in, the locker room music bouncing off the walls.
My friend Jake and I chatted a bit while getting ready, until my dad said,
"Enough talk. It's time to get on the ice!"
After about 20 minutes, I was on the ice with everyone else. Coach got there late so there was no prep talk in the locker room. The ice was shining like a fresh piece of paper right out of the copier (which would be the Zamboni).
We skated fast, then backward, and then the same thing the other way. Next we practice the drill, “pass and shoot.”
You pass it to the person skating, they shoot, and then you skate and they pass to you and on and on for 2 minutes.
When the buzzer buzzed to end the warm-ups, we skated to the bench for a 30 second prep talk. We chatted about how were going to great, and of course win the cup. But then, Coach said something so shocking I thought I was going to faint. The exact words were…
“This is my last game boys! After this I will be retiring.” But then he cheered up and said, “So lets get them, win this for me and win this for us! Take us away Tom.”
     “Arlington on 3,” I yelled “1, 2, 3, ARLINGTON!"
My line was out first. George, Bill and I were offense. Defense was Austin and Edmund (Anthony was getting there late). The puck dropped. BOOM! It was game time.
The first time everyone that went on was a blur. I was waiting on the bench. At 8:37, left in the 1st period was out again. Face-off in the other team's end. Then I went back to are defense. Austin took a shot, off his blocker on my stick, SCORES. I threw my glove up in the air and shot it down for my celebration.1- 0, I put my team ahead. The chatter on the bench was crazy.
      Blake was chanting, “Tom!Tom! Tom!"
      Austin hollered, “Nice goal, Tom!”
“Nice assist, too!” I called back. Sweat was trickling down my back “WOW.” I thought to myself, “I actually scored to put my team ahead, 1-0.We could actually have a pretty good chance."
At the end of the 1st period Twin City had fought back and now we were losing 2-1.
Charlie got into a fight, and had to have stitches in the bench (I’m not going to go into details but I'll say it was disgusting).

At the beginng of the second period, I saw Anthony go into the locker room to get dressed. Again, our line was out. Bill took the face-off at their end agin. It went to the boards, then around the net. I felt like a bird flying to the prey they were about to catch. The puck went into my stick, SLAPSHOT. I heard the crack of the stick and watched it zoom. Across the air and hit the netting.
The crowd erupted with roars like a thousand lions. People were jumping up in the air. When I got to the bench, Anthony just got out of the the locker room and got on to the wild bench.
He asked, "why is everyone so excited- its only me.”
“Anthony, I just scored to tie 2-2” I laughed. “Where have you been? It’s the 2nd period."
After Anthony got over the shock that it was 2-2 and the second period, he had to get out on the ice. I was shaking my knees over the 2 goals I just got when the most upsetting thing happened. I think I heard some start crying. I jumped from my seat to look what happened. Jack had just been tripped on a breakway and hit his shoulder on the post. He was struggling to get up. “Ouch." I thought to myself, "That has got to hurt."Our coach jumped the bench and darted over to Jack with a horrible look on his face, which told me that this was a severe injury.
Coach Yang helped him up and Mr. Mayo (Jack’s dad) was at the edge of the bench with a stretcher. They slowly made their way across the ice. When he was on the stretcher I heard someone say, “Broken collarbone."
The whole team had their heads down, gathering slowly around the bench.
Mr.Yang said, “We got to get back in this! We are not going down with out a fight!”
“He's right.” I thought, "We have to get back I this.” I could tell by the looks on my teammates faces they were thinking the same thing.
Mr.Yang said, “Get out there! Let's go! Let's go!" The puck was delivered back and forth for a period and a half. Twin City was on a 3-2 and Nolan fell with only Anthony left to defend. They scored. At least it was not like the other 2 times when Tate and Eric both let up goals on a 1-1. Now it was 3-2 and there was 4:32 left in the game. Our line was up again but this time I was center back up jack (lines were moved around). Face-off was in the neutral zone, and puck was chipped back to my side defense and they carried in the zone and dumped it in.
George got the puck and passed to Bill in front of the net who deflected in. He scored!
The crowd went wild; not it's 3-3 and now we had to defend to get into overtime. Coach was beaming at George when he got back on the bench. They pulled their goalie but that did not stop us. We were going in to overtime 3-3.
My line was sitting but Anthony's defense line was out. We got the puck right away and got a shot on net. The other teams coach went pale put it did not go in. Faceoff in their and once again. CLASH! The puck dropped, and straight back to Eric. Anthony wounded up for a one timer. Eric passes it Anthony shoots, SCORES!!!!!!
We did it! We won the state cup! Before Anthony had time to take it in we dived on then lifted up up up! After all the craziness died down I went home thinking, “WOW. I will not have a dream tonight about losing the championship."

Colleen’s Celebration
By Jenny

I smile as Colleen opens her gift from me and screams:
“It’s a One Direction Calendar!”  I am happy that she likes her gift.  Then I hear a knock on the door—it’s Kayla and Ashley!  Hooray!  They come in. Colleen opens their gift cards on the couch.  Then we go up to Colleen's room real quick to get her sneakers while Emma (Colleen’s 4 year old sister) tries to throw stuff at us.  She thinks this is funny.  We laugh and run downstairs and get ready to go to the 99 Restaurant for Colleen’s birthday dinner.  After that, we are going bowling.
We hop into the van and fasten our seatbelts.  We are ready to hit the road.  We chat as Mrs. Donnelly drives and finally, we reach the restaurant.  We run out of the car.  Kayla opens the door to the restaurant so far, she hits the people behind it.  The lady at the front desk gives us a buzzer that buzzes when it is time to be seated.  We sit and talk about the pictures on the walls as we wait.  Five or ten minutes later, I feel a vibration and I know it is the buzzer.
We all get seated and order a drink.  I get a chocolate milk that comes with popcorn for an appetizer.  The popcorn is so good!  We all talk and tell each other what the best and worst part of our day was.
After a while, the food comes.  I ordered chicken fingers—they are tasty.  Ashley and Kayla have chicken fingers too.  Colleen gets some type of adult meal.  We eat quickly so we will have time for dessert before we go bowling.  A waitress comes over to take our dessert order.  The workers sing Happy Birthday to Colleen and we all sing along.  Then we start gobbling our desserts.   We finish and get back in the car to go to the bowling alley.
It is a short ride and soon the car stops.  Colleen, Kayla, Ashley and I race out of the car towards a plain brick building.  When we get inside, we figure out it is “glow-in-the-dark” bowling. There are lanes full of people hitting pins with TVs that show the names of the people playing and their scores.  The lights are off and everything glows.  “This is going to be the best game ever!” I say to myself.  Mrs. Donnelly catches up and we get our bowling shoes
A new lane opens and we see the names Jenny, Kayla, Ashley, and Colleen on the TV screen.  “That’s us!” we yell.  We figure out we get a practice round.  Since my name is first on the TV, I get the practice roll and then Kayla but Ashley or Colleen don’t have time before Mrs. Donnelly says we have to start.
I’m up first.  I take a big roll and the ball streams down the alley then, gets a little out of control, and hits a bumper…4 pins tumble over on their sides.  6 more to go!  I take a second roll, not the best I could do, but pretty good.  It takes out 5 pins!  Better than I thought!  Sadly, 1 brave pin was picked up by the separator that picks up the pins you miss and puts down a new 10.
Next is Kayla.  “Go Kayla, go!” we all chant.  Kayla rolls the ball perfectly down the middle.   “That’s a strike!” I think to myself.  I am right!  The ball hits the pins and they all go tumbling down.  Kayla takes the lead!  She jumps up and down before she takes a seat.
Ashley gets her lucky ball and takes a shot!  It rolls into the gutter. Next roll, she is really focused—three pins go down!
Finally, it is the birthday girl—Colleen.  Kayla, Ashley, and I cheer her on, yelling: “Go, Colleen, Go!” She takes a great roll and …5 pins go down!  “YAY!” we yell and start dancing all around.  Then she takes her second roll, but it’s a gutter ball.

We bowl 2 games and cheer each other on.  Kayla is the high scorer in both games but doesn’t matter.  The scores are really close and we are having a great time.  At the end of the second game, the TV beeps and we know it is time to go.  As we walk out the door, I say, “I had the best time ever!”  Then we get back in the Donnelly’s van and go home.
